Acoustic Fluid Logger IV

The Acoustic Fluid Logger IV picks the fluid level and displays it on your computer screen. Pressure wave echo of AFL IV  fluid level

Sage AFL Software works with your existing portable computer to generate fluid level reports on oil and gas wells. Gathered and calculated data from the fluid level test includes a graph of the fluid level pick, as well as detailed data on pump intake pressure, bottom hole pressure and production increase calculations. 

All reports may be printed, saved as fully accessible .dat data files or transmitted electronically as Adobe .pdf files. Click for a closer look at the Sage AFL Software.

Since many oil and gas operators currently use portable computers in the field, Sage Technologies designed our Acoustic Fluid Logger IV system to work with any Windows computer. Sage AFL software is fully compatible with Windows 10 -- and also Win 8, Win 7, XP and Vista. Rather than requiring a captive computer, which raises the bulk and cost of the system, the AFL IV utilizes an operator's own notebook computer in the field, which makes the AFL IV both versatile and more affordable.

Operation of the AFL IV System

The Pressure Pulse Gas Gun is connected to the wellhead. A microphone cable connects the Pressure Pulse Gun to the Acoustic Fluid Logger IV. A USB cable attaches the fluid logger to the portable computer.

The Pressure Pulse Gas Gun is charged with compressed gas. When the gun is fired, reflections returning from the liquid and the collars are registered by the microphone inside the gas gun and transmitted to the fluid logger, which transfers data to the computer. The software displays the fluid level test as a graph on the computer screen, and the program calculates the fluid level depth. 

The Sage AFL software picks the fluid level and displays it onscreen, but also allows an operator to fine-tune or recalculate a fluid level by moving the start of shot, fluid level, or event of fixed depth (such as perforations, or a tubing anchor), and then re-examining the resulting data. This is another example of how Sage Technologies designed the AFL IV System for maximum user-friendly versatility.

Since no two oil or gas wells are quite the same, the software allows ample room for customization. Graph manipulation tools in the software allow the operator to zoom in on the fluid level pick, the compressed gas shot, and the site of any fixed event in the well, such as a tubing anchor.

Zoom liquid level screen with Sage AFL SoftwareThe Zoom Liquid Level plot shown at left is just one of the detailed data plots available with the Sage AFL software. This particular screen tool allows the operator to zoom in on the portion of the graph that shows the liquid fluid level in the oil or gas well -- the point where the compressed gas shot reflects off the fluid column. In other words, the graphs shows a magnifiied view of the actual liquid level.

The software graph also shows another feature of the Sage AFL software: the Colored Cursors depicting the start of shot (red cursor), fluid level (blue cursor) and event of fixed depth inside the wellbore (green cursor).

To shoot the compressed gas shot for the fluid level test, the Acoustic Fluid Logger IV works with any of the Sage Technologies' gas guns: the 1,500 psi Pressure Pulse Gas Gun, the 3,000 psi Pressure Pulse Gas Gun or the 5,000 psi High Pressure Gas Gun. Another option with the AFL IV, the Pressure Transducer, can complete a small pressure casing buildup before taking the fluid level shot, allowing calculation of the gas afterflow in the casing or in the wellbore.

The pressure transducer is used to measure the casing pressure for a short period of time before shooting the fluid level -- basically a gas afterflow measurement to aid in fluid level calculation.. Knowing the gas afterflow allows you to calculate the percentage of true liquid in the fluid column, so you can find a more accurate true fluid level depth. The Pressure Transducer stores inside the fluid logger box for easy transport.

The Sage Pressure Transducer attaches to the top of the Pressure Pulse Gun at the quick connect, instead of the usual pressure gauge. Cables connect both the pressure transducer and the internal microphone in the Pressure Pulse Gun to the Acoustic Fluid Logger IV unit.

Quick and easy Fluid Level Reports are available in standard .pdf form and give a wealth of information. For example, these two pages show the wellbore diagram, below left and the zoomed echo, below right, both created on the Report Generation tab of the Sage AFL software.

Compressed gas (CO²) for the bottle can be found from industrial gas suppliers. Simply look for a local oilfield, industrial, medical or beverage gas supplier. The 2.5 lb. bottle should be weighed empty, then filled with 2.5 lbs. of compressed gas.
